My personal preference is the eight pound sure head,and the hickery wood handle.

Available in 6 to 8Lbs. versions in Fiberglass or Hickory Handles. Designed to split and "bust" wood, mauls feature a wood cutting blade on one end and a round striking face on the opposite end. The striking face is intended for driving steel wedges that are used in conjunction with splitting logs.
Wedges
Are designed to split logs, firewood, staves and other wood products. Drop forged from high carbon tool steel, wedges are properly beveled around the "struck" face to deter chipping and cracking
